Accountant & Internal Auditor

We are currently seeking an accountant to oversee the outsourced general ledger and payroll functions of the Institute.  The position, reporting to the director of accounting, includes understanding, examining, evaluating, monitoring and developing effective operations and internal controls to ensure the accurate preparation of the financial statements and payroll.  As such, this person needs thorough understanding of both accounting and payroll principles. 

Responsibilities

  • Manages the relationship and guides the outsourced staff by coordinating activities, establishing controls, and answering questions.
  • Maintains accounting and payroll controls by following, preparing and recommending policies and procedures.
  • Reconciles financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing transactional financial information.
  • Answers accounting and payroll procedure questions by researching and interpreting accounting policy and regulations.
  • Makes recommendations for non-compliance or other improvements by analyzing current business flows and procedures.
  • Prepares account entries by compiling and analyzing account activity.
  • Substantiates financial transactions by auditing documents; maintains a reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Complies (with the assistance of the legal team) with federal, state, and local financial legal requirements, enforcing adherence to requirements, and advising management on needed actions.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Maintains customer confidence and protects operations by keeping financial information confidential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance or other Internal Audit related fields.
  • CPA and/or CIA licensed candidate preferred.
  • 5 + years’ experience in public accounting or internal audit.
  • Familiarity with IT systems and controls.
  • Payroll experience a must.
  • Hands-on experience with Ceridian is a big plus!
