Altarum's Communications and Public Affairs team, based in Washington, D.C., seeks a public relations specialist with experience in media relations and social media to help build the organization's brand and promote its work, solutions and policy ideas. In addition to traditional and social media outreach, this position also involves  thought leadership, internal communications, marketing communications and general PR strategy and support.


Altarum is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a better, more sustainable future through ideas and action that transform health and health care in America. We're addressing the nation's greatest challenges—from the rising cost of care to the opioid crisis—with some of the most influential people and institutions in health care.

The public relations specialist will be a key member of a high-performing and collaborative PR team with a central role in contributing to Altarum's work and mission.


Media relations:

  • Monitor health care issues, topics and policy news to identify opportunities to deliver relevant Altarum experts and source materials to journalists.
  • Work independently and in coordination with the larger team to develop and pitch story ideas.
  • Write press releases that highlight important work in areas from substance use disorder to healthcare payment and quality.
  • Field requests for information from the media and help prepare subject matter experts for interviews.

Social media:

  • Help lead and contribute to a team of people who manage social media platforms for Altarum's programs, products and Centers.
  • Create and promote quality content that breaks through to the larger health care policy Twitter community.
  • Lead the social media team in gathering and analyzing social media metrics each quarter; provide analysis and suggestions for new strategies and tactics to continually build on successes.

Marketing communications:

  • Help create and implement marketing communications strategies and plans.
  • Draft marketing collateral materials to promote Altarum's services, research, and products.

Other activities:

  • Contribute content for the monthly all-staff newsletter.
  • Provide occasional logistics support to Altarum policy and research programs in convening thought leaders.
  • Help administer content on by uploading, editing, and formatting content using a CMS.
  • Participate regularly in PR strategy sessions and regular team meetings to coordinate activities, contribute ideas and execute on new initiatives.


  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as journalism, political science, history, humanities, or communications.
  • Roughly three to eight years of experience in a public relations role, including experience developing and carrying out effective communications campaigns on policy issues.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with people at all levels of the organization, including executive leadership.
  • Solid understanding of healthcare policy, institutions, issues and media.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement when developing communications strategy and messaging on sensitive issues.
  • Experience using a content management system (CMS), such as Word Press, to upload and format website content.
  • Collaborative, flexible and proactive work style.
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop is a plus.
