Overview

Altarum is excited to announce that our Communications and Public Affairs team, based in Washington, D.C., seeks a social media specialist with expertise in social media to help build the organization's brand and promote its work, solutions and policy ideas. In addition to social media outreach, this position also will involve media outreach, thought leadership, internal communications, marketing communications and general PR strategy and support.

 

Altarum is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a better, more sustainable future through ideas and action that transform health and health care in the U.S. We're addressing the nation's greatest challenges—from the rising cost of care to the opioid crisis—with some of the most influential people and institutions in health care.

 

 

The social media specialist will be a key member of a high-performing and collaborative PR team with a central role in contributing to Altarum's work and mission.

Responsibilities

Social media

  • Develop and execute social media strategies and tactics.
  • Monitor social media and traditional media for opportunities to contribute to discussions and debates on health care policy.
  • Create and promote smart, relevant and creative content that breaks through to the larger health care policy Twitter community.
  • Serve as the organization's internal expert on social media practices, including the use of visual content and paid promotion.
  • Gather and analyze social media metrics each quarter; provide insightful analysis and suggestions for new strategies and tactics to continually build on successes.

Media relations

  • Monitor health care issues, topics and policy news to identify opportunities to deliver relevant Altarum experts and source materials to journalists.
  • Work independently and in coordination with the larger team to pitch story ideas.

Internal communications

  • Participate in developing strategies to improve organizational impact through effective internal communications.
  • Serve as chief writer of the monthly all-staff e-newsletter.

Other Activities

  • As needed, write press releases, blog posts, website content, and marketing materials such as brochures, event invitations, FAQs, white papers and fact sheets.
  • Provide logistics support to Altarum policy and research programs in convening thought leaders.
  • Help administer content on the website by uploading, editing, and formatting content using a content management system.
  • Participate regularly in PR strategy sessions and regular team meetings to coordinate activities, contribute ideas and execute on new initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as journalism, political science, history, humanities, or communications.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a public relations role, including experience developing and carrying out effective social media campaigns on policy issues.
  • Strong writing and message development skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with people at all levels of the organization, including executive leadership.
  • Solid understanding of healthcare policy, institutions, issues and media.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement when developing communications strategy and messaging on sensitive issues.
  • Experience using a content management system, such as Word Press, to upload and format website content.
  • Collaborative, flexible and proactive work style.
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and consistently meet deadlines.
