As an Information Systems Administrator in our Washington, DC office, you’ll be responsible for day-to-day tasks ranging from Tier I user support (PC and Mac) for both software and hardware to high level Windows and Network Administration.


Altarum’s Corporate Information Technology department supports 5 domestic locations, 200+ servers, and 450+ users. You’ll be part of a close knit team of IT professionals – working together as efficiently and effectively as possible, ultimately ensuring that our internal infrastructure groups and elite team of analysts, developers, editors, graphic artists, project managers, researchers, software engineers, video editors, web designers, and more… all have the tools they need to fulfill our mission of serving the public good to improve human health.


On a day-to-day basis, you’re going to work in a fast-paced environment and collaborate with IT colleagues on multiple simultaneous projects including maintenance, upgrades, and enhancements of our infrastructure. You’ll be responsible for making sure we’re going down the correct path, we’re following best practices, and our security is top notch. You’ll also provide local and remote support to Altarum Enterprise staff in Ann Arbor, MI, Portland, ME, Rockville, MD, Silver Spring, MD, and Washington, DC, as well as to staff that work primarily at client site’s or from home offices. We also expect you to grow professionally and technically - you’ll have the opportunity to attend a training class or an industry conference each year, and you’ll play an active role in our internal cross-training exercises.


This individual is expected to provide outstanding end-user support for both hardware and software issues on both a PC and Macs including such technologies as:


  • Windows 7/10
  • MacOS 10.11/.12
  • Microsoft Office 2013/2016
  • Skype for Business
  • VPN Client Support
  • Microsoft SharePoint
  • Dell Data Protection Encryption


This individual may also help manage various backend systems such as:

  • Firewall Administration (Palo Alto)
  • VPN Administration (Palo Alto)
  • Router and Switch Administration (Cisco/Juniper)
  • Wireless System Administration (Aruba)
  • Server OS and Network Maintenance (monthly/quarterly/after hours)
  • Unitrends Enterprise Backup
  • Virtualization Administration (VMware preferred)
  • Storage (Kaminario preferred)
  • Cisco VOIP/Skype Cloud PBX Phone Administration


  • 3-5 years of Windows and Network-based Administration
  • 3-5 years providing Mac support (hardware and software)
  • 2-5 years providing Desktop/Helpdesk support to a variety of users (both hardware and software)
  • Application support of the aforementioned Microsoft and other software products
  • Aptitude for quick learning and immediate application of newly gained skills
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills in a variety of software and hardware environments
  • The individual may be required to visit other sites in the Metro DC Area, Maine, and Michigan
  • As the location of this office will likely change over the next year, the ability to work out of a Virginia office location is required
